Weekly Interesting Cigar Facts
Cigars Were Once a Form of Currency
In parts of 19th-century Cuba, cigars weren’t just smoked—they were actually used as a form of currency!
Workers on tobacco plantations and in cigar factories were sometimes paid partially in cigars instead of cash. These cigars could be smoked, traded, or sold to others, making them a valuable everyday commodity.
Because of their quality and the global demand for Cuban cigars, they held real purchasing power—especially in local markets and among workers. In some cases, a bundle of cigars could buy you a hearty meal, a new shirt, or even a night’s stay at an inn.
It’s a great reminder that cigars have always been more than just a luxury item—they’ve been a symbol of craftsmanship, pride, and, at one point, cold hard value.
