The U.S. President Who Made Cigars Cool Again

While many presidents enjoyed cigars, John F. Kennedy had a unique relationship with them—especially right before signing the Cuban trade embargo in 1962.

Here’s the fun part: The night before the embargo went into effect, Kennedy reportedly asked his press secretary, Pierre Salinger, to round up as many of his favorite Cuban cigars—H. Upmann Petit Coronas—as possible.

Salinger scrambled and came back with 1,200 cigars the next morning. Moments later, Kennedy signed the embargo, making it illegal to import any more Cuban cigars into the U.S.

Talk about timing.

To this day, that move is one of the most legendary cigar power plays in presidential history—and it cemented JFK’s status as one of the most iconic cigar smokers of all time.
