Weekly Interesting Cigar Facts
The Cigar That Saved a Life
We all know cigars can be a great way to relax, but did you know one actually saved a man’s life?
Back in the late 1800s, a man named Charles J. Guiteau was arrested for assassinating U.S. President James Garfield. During his trial, one of his guards—a man named William Mason—became so enraged by the crime that he decided to take justice into his own hands. Mason grabbed his rifle, took aim at Guiteau in his jail cell, and pulled the trigger.
But right at that moment, another guard happened to be lighting a cigar nearby. The sudden flicker of flame caught Mason’s eye, distracting him for just a split second—long enough for his shot to go wide and miss Guiteau completely.
The failed attempt meant that Guiteau lived long enough to go through the full trial process before ultimately being executed in 1882. But if it weren’t for that perfectly timed cigar, history might have played out a little differently!
So, next time you light up, just remember—you never know when a cigar might change the course of history.
