Weekly Interesting Cigar Facts

The Cuban Cigar That Wasn’t Actually Cuban

Ever heard of "Clear Havanas"? They were once some of the most popular cigars in the U.S., but there was a catch—they weren’t actually from Cuba!

Back in the early 1900s, Cuban cigars were considered the gold standard, but strict import laws and high tariffs made them expensive. To get around this, American cigar makers started importing Cuban tobacco leaves and rolling the cigars in the U.S. These cigars, known as Clear Havanas, were made with 100% Cuban tobacco—but because they weren’t rolled in Cuba, they weren’t legally Cuban cigars.

Despite this loophole, Clear Havanas became wildly popular, even being favored by U.S. Presidents like Dwight D. Eisenhower. Some were so well-made that even seasoned smokers had trouble telling them apart from Cuban-made cigars.

But after the 1962 Cuban embargo, Clear Havanas disappeared, since Cuban tobacco could no longer be legally imported into the U.S. Today, they’re just a piece of cigar history—but they serve as a reminder that sometimes, a clever workaround can turn into a legendary product.
